What is Surfing?
By Jearsey Maxx | January 13, 2010
The term surfing is commonly used to call a sport that is done at the ocean. This pertains on the various styles and or moves that a person or a surfer does along the surface of a breaking and huge ocean waves. Using a standing wave, surfing is not only done on the salty water but as well as on rivers and other aquatic waters. The ultimate purpose of using the term surfing is to specify activities which is specifically about riding huge waves using a āVā shaped board which wherein the surfer rides on.
Other type of surfing is like the body boarding which wherein the surfer rides on the waves of course using the surfing board and partly ascends his body from the surface of the board. This type of surfing is a little different from the bodysurfing which wherein the surfer uses his body alone to surf.
The 2 ultimate subdivisions within the contemporary surfing styles are the short boarding and the long boarding which reflects the difference from the surfing riding style and the surfboard design.
Tow-in surfing is commonly but is never really associated with the huge ocean wave surfing. In tow-in surfing, the surfer tows into the wave using a motorized water vehicle like the Jet Ski. It is called as tow-in surfing due to the fact that this involves the use of the vehicular speed which is totally different from the standard paddle surfing that only depends on the current of the ocean waves just to move on.
Sailboats can also be used on surfing on huge ocean waves. However, the surfing chances using sailboats greatly depends on the direction, wind conditions, and the wave size. Sailors are greatly different from the surfers due to the fact that they do not surf or sail on the ocean just to ride and enjoy on surfing on large ocean waves but rather goes out sale for the purpose of sailing trip together with other company which is again different from surfing using surfboards where the surfer only surfs alone.
Other surfing related sports like the sea kayaking and the paddle boarding do not necessarily require the surfer to use huge ocean waves and strong winds just like what other derivative sports like windsurfing, kite surfing, and board surfing do require.
Another type of surfing is the wake surfing wherein the surfer uses V-drive boards that is attached behind a boat and use the waves created by the boat to surf.
